Similarly to the regular, in-person Pre-IPT Test, the Pre-IPT Oral Remote Adaptation Test is an individually administered, structured oral interview between an examiner and a student. The test is specially designed to be developmentally appropriate for preschoolers, and it has different requirements for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old students. The OnlineIPT system selects the appropriate test automatically based on the child's age on the date of testing. In the course of the test, the OnlineIPT system also applies automatic stopping rules to ensure that the test does not become too challenging and frustrating to students.
This adaptation requires a video conferencing connection between the examiner and the student and a small range of simple props that the examiner has to have available; specified below. At the student’s end, the Pre-IPT Oral Remote Adaptation Test requires an at-home assistant to establish the video conferencing connection and to test that it works. Screen size influences young children’s attention, and for this reason, it is preferable that the internet device at the child’s end is either a tablet or a laptop rather than a smartphone.
Materials the Examiner Needs
To administer the test, the examiner will need an Internet-connected device with a video conferencing app that is approved by the school or district. The device should either be a laptop that can show two active windows, one for the video conference connection with the student and the other for the test interface, or the examiner needs two devices, one for each function that needs to be active.
The examiner will also need to wear some specific items of clothing and have a few props within reach. The test includes questions related to these.
For the Pre-IPT English Remote Adaptation, the examiner will need:
Clothing
- Either a top or bottom that is in a primary color: red, blue, or yellow.
- Either wear a pair of shoes or have a pair of shoes as a prop to show to the student.
Props
- Three balls of different sizes and colors.
- It should be possible to describe the sizes as small, bigger, and biggest (or big, bigger, biggest if feasible).
- It should be possible for you to bounce one of the balls to demonstrate doing something with the ball.
- Set the balls on a table, chair, or other surface that is within easy reach for you during testing.
For the Pre-IPT Spanish Remote Adaptation, the examiner will need:
Clothing
- A top that is in a primary color: red, blue, or yellow.
Props
- A book and a jug with water or other liquid.
- Three glasses or cups of different sizes and colors.
To Access the Remote Testing
When you are ready to administer a remote test, follow the process below.
- Click on the Oral Test tab.
- Follow the prompts as you would normally to administer Oral Tests.
- When it is time for you to select a Test Form, select Remote Testing. Then follow the rest of the prompts as usual.
- After you click on Administer test, the first screen you see will have a set of preparatory steps. Once you have all the items and props you need, click on Ready.
- On the next screen, establish the pre-arranged video conferencing connection with the student through Zoom, FaceTime, or other app that enables audio and video between the examiner and the student. Once you have established connection with the student and you can both hear and see each other clearly, click on Next to begin the test.
- And that’s it! Everything else works like it usually does.
