Online Pre-IPT—Oral Tests: Administration

Test Environment
The test should be conducted at a table in a quiet, non-threatening area that allows for individual testing. As with any standardized test, there should be no surrounding noise or activity.

Testing Time
The Online Pre-IPT—Oral Test is simple to administer and takes an average of 15–20 minutes per student. Testing time depends on the language ability of the student. For students whose language ability is very low, the test will be over quickly, because the test questions are grouped into difficulty levels and you stop at the end of the level that has proven hard for the student. The stopping rules are automated in the OnlineIPT. If the student’s language ability is high, however, the test will proceed through most or all of the available levels, and it may last longer than 20 minutes. The student’s final score will be one of five levels: A–E.

If students are to be assessed using both the English and the Spanish IPT Oral Tests, the tests should be conducted in two separate testing sessions. The tests should not be given to the same student in the same sitting. The results of back-to-back testing may be invalid because of possible test taker fatigue, and also because the tests follow the same structure and some of the content may be similar, although not identical. If the practical arrangements at a testing site force examiners to test students with two tests one after the other, the student should minimally be given a small break between the tests to move their body and clear their mind.
